Yegor Letov Dies at Age 43

Yegor Letov, singer of Soviet-era Russian punk band Grazhdanskaya Oborona, died on Feb. 19th, 2008 of Heart Failure. If you don't know who he is, this dude did a pretty good job of summing things up: http://soveticus.wordpress.com/2008/02/20/yegor-letov-had-died/

Here, take a free album. I don't think Russia cares.

Viva La Christpunchers!

I know we went over a little tiny bit of the Christpunchers in our last broadcast, but I don't feel like it was a sufficient introduction. (Plus I felt that our depiction of them, at least material wise, was inaccurate.)

So...THE CHRISTPUNCHERS. The Christpunchers are a 3 piece instrumental sludge/doom metal band from Detroit, formed in 2001 by Vince Williams (gits, ex-7000 Dying Rats), Josh Diebel (samples, also ex-7000 Dying Rats *vox*), and Mike Alonso (drums, possible ex-Seduce...? I'll try to get confirmation on that.) Conceived through a night of drinking, and free from the constraints of 7000 Dying Rats, due to a hiatus, the bastard band was born out of a bottle of whiskey, and set free to scourge the ears of metalheads and club goers throughout Detroit. Chainsaw guitar riffs and crashing cymbals capitalize on their intense pummeling presence; their tracks layered and supported by samples from cult favorites like "The Warriors" and "Airplane". These guys stand up to their namesake (lifted from an episode of "The Simpsons"), more so than pop-punkers "Christpunchers-MPLS". With audible influences including The Melvins and TAD, and attitudes fueled by their general disdain for their surroundings, these guys pack as much as they can into one big angry menacing package. The Christpunchers are currently distributing their material through Unfortunate Miracle Records.

Hey, Free Music!
The Christpunchers - Introit - Grandier
The Christpunchers - Tread of the Iron Legion

As you may have guessed from our first broadcast, we love TAD. (and Boris too, apparently...) There's something about the thick guitars, punishing percussion, and banshee vocals, provided by ex-butcher Tad Doyle, that keeps us coming back for more. Perhaps we love the abuse? Nonetheless, TAD stands out from other "grunge" bands that faded into obscurity after the mid-nineties. In it's livespan, TAD has released 4 studio albums, 1 live album and more than a dozen 7"s of pure underground fury, that stand the test of the time nearly 20 years later. And now there's a DVD capturing their rise to the top and eventual decline:

"TAD took the idea of playing LIVE very seriously; it was a life or death matter. This DVD not only stands as testimony to that claim, but it’s also a cinematic document of the world’s HEAVIEST band EVER (as Bruce Pavitt so incisively puts it) bodily stretching that assertion beyond any previously known limitations. Over our dozen years, TAD blew circuits and punctured eardrums, herniated discs and damaged vertebrae, pinched nerves and triggered sciatica, incited lumbago here, caused concussions there, a catalog of ailments that we took in stride as occupational hazards—may tinnitus forever unite us—and it was worth every thin dime of the always rising physical cost, an iconic barcode branded into our neural and muscular-skeletal tissues for all time. Better than a tattoo, it’s an open scar that roars, a broken alarm bell ringing from the lost event horizon of a long-dead star, one we could never see—that is, until this DVD clipped it back onto the light box of the silver screen, where it can be deciphered and viewed anew. This documentary telescopes the musical pathology of TAD down into the image of an electrocardiograph recording the minor-mode melody of a final infarct, a demented soundtrack that is neither tame nor de-clawed. It was never meant to be. Dare to feel it, and, like me, risk bleeding internally."

-Kurt Danielson, Halloween 2007
