The Whip

Here's a band formed by Jared Warren and Scott Jernigan of KARP, as well as Joe Preston (of every sludge band you've ever liked). They only existed for around a year, or possibly less, before 'The Whip' came to a complete halt following the accidental and untimely death of Jernigan. Here we have their only official release, a 7-inch released on Wantage Records (check left sidebar), as well as a small collection of loose-ends, including two untitled tracks and a cover of Queen's "Stone Cold Crazy".

Don't get this confused with that hipster electro garbage:

KARP - Self Titled

{This was originally posted by myself on [shiny grey monotone]. I thought it was funny and deserved a re-post}

Year: 1997

[T]his is KARP's final, and my favorite, of all their releases. KARP has been remarked (very stupidly in my opinion) as a 'metal band that even indie rockers can love'. Fuck that. KARP was not metal. They were a noisy cacophonous bundle of confusion, humility, and pure-fucking-exuberance. Song after song is an orgy of cochleatic-grinding that continues to pummel you across your skull long after the record ends. 'KARP' is an ear-raping experience you will never forget, nor never WANT to forget. You will cherish the moment you had with the band...reminisce fondly on Scott Jernigan (drums) breathing heavily over you as Jared Warren (bass, vox) holds you down by the midsection and Chris Smith (gits, vox) penetrates balls deep into your cerebral cortex. Your wounds have healed...but the emotional trauma has stamped itself upon your soul.

KARP is really good! Heavily influenced by the Melvins! It's like a grungy Big Business or somethin!

Big Business. Tour EP III

^^This picture's an old one dated 2006, from my first time seeing both Big Business and the Melvins. I had only heard of Big Business from a friend of mine who saw them on their last tour then burned me a copy of their second Tour EP, which I cherished 'til I bought their first record. That's pretty much the reason why I've been trying to keep a full collection of Big Business' Tour EPs on the grinder blog. I'm just hoping that someone will go out of their way, give this a listen, and become a fan.

All in all, that's the purpose of this blog; convert our listeners into fans in hope that they go check out and support the band live. Most artists make a hell out a lot more money out of touring than they do releasing records (where sometimes labels and management intervene and take their large cut of the sales). If you find anything you like here...go see the band live and scream your throat raw!

This is the third Tour EP by Big Business, and it's freshly released. Make sure you buy a copy when Big Business and the Melvins come tearing through your town--I know I will.

Big Business. (Tour EP I)

Early Biznazz in the works. Took me awhile to actually find a copy of this--had to negotiate with the Russians. Sorry if it's getting redundant around here...but SHIT; it's Big Business.

Tour EP I. If you're interested in purchasing this sucker...better jump on it soon; Wantage USA is running low on copies.

(They'll be recording new material this summer)

Big Business. (Tour EP II)

The first time I heard Big Business was back in 2006 while I was working at a record store. Keep in mind that back then I wasn't aware of Jared's previous bands The Whip and KARP; so as you can imagine, I was pretty dumbfounded by their unique sound and the fact that all that noise and energy was being created by two people. The idea of a Power-Duo was somewhat alien to me at the time--which made them even more appealing; although nowadays I'm much more familiar with bands who only have two members on instruments (like Iron Lung and a possible new obsession; Double Dagger).

This EP was actually the first thing I ever from them; it consists of three songs that eventually made it on their second album, Here Come the Waterworks, and another song that we played on our show yesterday; "Be Stiff". Try to pretend it's 2006 again and that you've never heard anything from BB, KARP, or The Whip: d/l.

Also: Keep in mind that the three songs on this EP that later made it onto Waterworks are DIFFERENT VERSIONS. Could benefit from adding it to your collection.

NOTE (4/22): So it has come to my attention that Big Business is no longer a "duo". Toshi Kasai (who has done sound engineering on Jelvins, Melvins, and Big Business records) has officially joined the band; as of March 2008. You may recognize him as the little asian dude with the guitar who was making a bunch of crazy noises if you saw them live late 2006/early 2007. Congrats Toshi--glad to have you on board.

(That's him next to Danny DeVito; who has subsequently joined the Melvins as a double-necked grind sitarist)
